Kayla cruises in Beavercreek
BEAVERCREEK, Ohio – Kayla Davis fired a 1-under-par 71 in overcoming a 6-shot deficit in the Girls 15-19 division at Beavercreek Golf Club.
After an opening-round 78 which left her six shot off McKenna Jordan’s lead, Davis played the only sub-80 final round by a wide margin in pulling away for the victory. Davis started things off with a birdie at the fourth and made it through the first 14 holes in 2-over-par before a blistering finish.
Three double bogeys on the front nine by Jordan enabled Davis to move into a tie where the two remained through 14. Davis proceeded to post birdies at 15, 17 and 18 while Jordan closed with a triple bogey to account for the final margin.
Davis posted rounds of 78-71—149 while Jordan finished alone in second place at 72-83—155. Iris Shin rounded out the top three with rounds of 77-84—161.
Brinks survives tight field in Boys 16-19
Zach Brinks fired rounds of 76-75—151 to pull out a 2-shot victory over a group of five other players in the Boys 16-19 division at Beavercreek.
Brinks began the final round three shots behind Logan Thomas and Chasen Poole and capitalized on three birdies over the first four holes in emerging victorious. That quick start put him in the lead and he would not relinquish it despite a finish that included two bogeys and a double bogey over the final five holes.
Finishing tied for second was the quintet of Thomas (73-80—153), Evan DiSanto (74-79—153), Griffin Mitchell (74-79—153), Alex Cabungcal (77-76—153) and Dylan Stevens (80-73—153).
Armbruster out-duels Braun in hot finish
Ben Armbruster played the final seven holes in bogey-free 2-under-par to beat Zach Braun by two shots in the Boys 14-15 division at Beavercreek.
Armbruster finished with rounds of 78-75—153 and started the closing nine trailing Braun by three shots. Braun fell back with a quadruple bogey and double bogey at 10 and 11, respectively, but stormed back into contention with a hot finish of his own that included birdies on three of the last five holes.
Braun finished alone in second place with rounds of 78-77—155 while Ty Sylla (81-75—156), Matthew Daulton (81-75—156) and Victor Caliguri (76-80—156) all finished in a tie for third place.
McCarrell dominates Boys 13-and-Under
Logan McCarrell notched his second GJT victory in posting a wire-to-wire win in the Boys 13-and-under division at Beavercreek.
McCarrell posted rounds of 76-71—147 to win in dominating fashion – eight shots over Landen Howard.
Leading Howard by four shots entering the final round, McCarrell left no chance for the field by playing the first 10 holes of the final round in bogey-free 1-under-par. Birdies at 12 and 14 put an exclamation point on the win as Howard was unable to make up any ground.
Howard finished with rounds of 80-79—159 to finish alone in second place while A.J. Wilhelm took third at 80-81—161.
